# Starting and stopping a stream

Streams is where real-time biosignal data is visualized. We supports streaming from multiple devices across multiple chart types, configurable layouts, recording, marker integrations and viewport management.

## Open Streams

1. From the Dashboard, click **Streams** in the sidebar.
2. Click **Start a New Stream** seen in the top header bar.
3. You will be taken to the visualizer module of Streams.

## Marker Configurations

You can create markers before you start plotting your data. We currently support 2 types of markers

| Type             | Description                                                                                   | Supported Devices                |
| ---------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------- |
| Software Markers | Event and Epoch markers are assigned to keyboard keys and are triggered manually by the user. | Instinct EEG Headset, xSys, xBud |
| Digital Markers  | Event and epoch markers are fired by DI line edges                                            | xBud                             |

## Start data flow

1. Click **Start Plotting** in the top toolbar.
2. Live data begins flowing from the connected device.
3. Charts update in real time at the device's sampling rate.
4. The default layout shows a single full-width real-time chart.

## Stop data flow

Click **Stop Plotting** to halt real-time data acquisition. This does not disconnect the device: you can restart plotting at any time.

> **Note:** If you were recording data, then data gets automatically saved if you stop plotting.
