# Running an Experiment

Once an experiment is published, you can run it against a real (or test) subject. Start a run from My Experiments — open a published experiment and select New Experiment Run. You'll go through a short 3-step setup before the session begins.

## Step 1: Configure Parameters

<figure><img src="https://2761951758-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FhtBZnSGOC4EMhU3nc5oM%2Fuploads%2F3lWQOGqOUzniyiqRBCSB%2FExperiment%20Run%20-%20Step%201%20(with%20exp%20parameters).png?alt=media&amp;token=c0692cec-a056-42c8-86e0-381ed3e035c4" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Set the timing for the session:

* Welcome Countdown — how long the intro screen shows before the experiment begins
* No. of Trials and Inter Trial Interval Duration — set per trial, in seconds

If the experiment includes stimuli with adjustable parameters (like an SSVEP Flicker), you'll also set those here — for example, Frequency (Hz) and Phase (degrees) for each one. If there's nothing to configure, this section simply shows that no additional parameters are needed.

A timeline preview on this screen (and the next two) shows your experiment's structure, total estimated time, and number of trials, so you can sanity-check the run before starting it.

## Step 2: Configure Hardware

Set up where the data comes from:

* Source — select the device to record from
* Trigger Source — choose the Backend and Port used to capture markers/triggers
* Session notes — add any free-text notes for this specific run

## Step 3: Onboarding Information

Enter details about who's being recorded. You can entire a name to select a pre-existing subject or create a new subject here. Note that Session ID is auto-generated for each experiment run.

## Running the experiment

After setup, you'll land on the Researcher screen — your control and monitoring view for the session. It shows:

* Live timeline, with all the epoch and trial information
* A streams window where data gets plotted realtime
* A Participant Session preview, mirroring exactly what the participant sees on their end
* An Information panel with the experiment name, device, participant ID, session ID, active channels, CPU usage, and sampling rate
* A Session Notes field

{% hint style="info" %}
Ensure that before you start an experiment, you pop out the participant session into a new window and move it to the participant's display.You may also pop out the real time plot window out to a different monitor if needed.
{% endhint %}

Before starting, choose Mock Run to do a dry test without it counting as real data, or Experiment Run for the actual recorded session, then select Start Experiment.

Meanwhile, the Participant Screen shows the participant their current instruction or stimulus, along with the trial count, session progress, and time remaining — everything they need to follow along without seeing the researcher's controls.

## Saving and exporting your data

When a session ends, BXI Studio saves the recording automatically — you'll see a brief "saving" step before it confirms the data's been stored. If a session is stopped early, you'll be asked whether to save the partial data or discard it.

Either way, once saved, the recording shows up under Experiment Datasets, ready for review or export.
