# Configure electrodes (Instinct)

This is the final Instinct configuration screen. This is where you fine-tune each electrode's position and verify signal quality through real-time impedance monitoring.

## Screen layout

### Left panel: EEG diagram

An interactive head diagram shows all 15 electrode positions. The static reference layout matches the channel map shipped with the Instinct headset:

Each electrode is color-coded by impedance:

| Color  | Impedance | Meaning                                          |
| ------ | --------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| Green  | < 50 kΩ   | Good contact: ready for recording                |
| Yellow | 50–200 kΩ | Moderate: may work, but adjusting is recommended |
| Red    | > 200 kΩ  | Poor contact: needs adjustment                   |

Zoom and pan the diagram with the controls in the top-right corner:

* **+**: zoom in
* **−**: zoom out
* **Fit**: reset to fit the full diagram

Click an electrode on the diagram to select it.

### Right panel: electrode list

A scrollable list of all 15 electrodes. Each row shows:

| Element    | Description                                                                         |
| ---------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Name       | Electrode identifier (FP1, FP2, F3, F4, C3, C4, P3, P4, O1, O2, F7, F8, T3, T4, CZ) |
| Position   | Current motor position in mm (0–20 mm range)                                        |
| Reset      | Refresh icon to reset the electrode to position 0                                   |
| Down/Up    | Motor control arrows (click or long-press)                                          |
| Impedance  | Real-time impedance reading in kΩ                                                   |
| Status bar | Color-coded right border matching impedance quality                                 |

## Adjust an electrode

1. Click a row or click on the diagram to select an electrode.
2. The selected row highlights in purple.
3. Use the **Up/Down arrows** to move the motor:
   * Click: move one step
   * Long press: continuous movement (hold the button)
4. Watch the impedance value update in real time.
5. Goal: get all electrodes to green (< 50 kΩ).

### Tips for good impedance

* Move electrodes down to increase scalp contact.
* If impedance stays red, the cause is usually hair blocking the electrode.
* Ask the subject to part their hair at that electrode location.
* Use the **reset** button to return an electrode to position 0 and start over.

## Options menu

Click the three-dot menu (top-right) for additional options:

* **Reset All Electrodes**: move all motors back to position 0.
* **Recalibrate**: return to the [Calibration](/bxi-studio/calibration/calibration.md) screen.
* **Disconnect**: disconnect the device.

## Complete configuration

1. Adjust electrodes until most show green impedance.
2. Click **Continue** at the bottom-right.
3. The **Configuration Complete** modal appears:
   * Enter or confirm the subject name.
   * Check **Save subject and configurations** to persist motor positions.
   * Click **Finish**.
4. BXI Studio navigates you to the Dashboard.

> **Tip:** Saved configurations mean the next time this subject uses this device, the electrodes automatically move to their saved positions.
