# Calibration

Calibration makes sure your device is reading data accurately before you start a session — covering both the physical positioning of electrodes and the quality of their contact with the scalp. It's a step you'll run through when setting up a new device, and periodically after that to keep readings reliable.

There are two parts to it:

* [Impedance Calibration](/bxi-studio/calibration/impedance-calibration-instinct-and-xsys.md) — checks the electrical contact between each electrode and the skin, since poor contact leads to noisy or unusable signal
* [Motor Calibration](/bxi-studio/calibration/calibration.md) — calibrates the motors that extend and retract each electrode, so they can make proper physical contact

Start with Motor Calibration for devices with motorized electrodes, then move on to Impedance Calibration before recording.
